How to Use Furniture Images from Websites

We often get asked how to save furniture or accessory images from websites, so that they can be incorporated into a DreamDraper design and used for a presentation to your client.  It's easy to do!

On the right is a depiction of a typical webpage featuring chairs.  Notice that the chairs are shown as small thumbnail images.  On most webpages you will be able to double-click on the thumbnail to view a larger image of the chair.  Whenever possible it is best to save the larger image, which will appear sharper in your presentation.

This following procedure will work for the PC on most websites, although occasionally you will come across a site that has their images protected and you will not be able to save the images using this method.

After you have found your desired furniture or accessory item, place your mouse over the image and right-click.  A menu of options will appear, similar to the illustration shown on the left.

Then left-click on the option shown in the illustration:  Save Picture As...

At this point, a Save Picture pop-up window will appear, similar to the illustration shown below.

The next step is to choose the location on your computer where you want to save the image.  Most of our customers save their information in client folders located under MY DOCUMENTS.  To quickly go to that location, click on the MY DOCUMENTS icon (see #1) on the left side of the pop-up window.  Or use the "Save in:" drop-down box (see #2) that is located at the top of the pop-up window, to navigate to the location on your computer where you want to save the image.

Helpful tips:

  1. Remember the location on your computer where you saved the image.  A common problem is that people will save files, and then they can't remember where they are located!

  2. Remember the source of the image.  You may want to prefix the filename to indicate the furniture company and model number, for your future reference.

  3. In general, get into the habit of not including special characters in a filename, other than underscores and dashes.  Some programs will not recognize files that contain special characters as part of the filename.  (Special characters include items such as $ or %, etc.)

  4. A filename should only contain one period, located between the filename and the extension, such as "filename.jpg".

  5. Make sure that you are saving the furniture or accessory image as a JPG file, with an extension of jpg.

Now that your image has been saved to your computer's hard drive, you can insert it into the DreamDraper program and incorporate actual furniture or accessory images into your designs.  Below is an example of a very popular technique first introduced by DreamDraper - designing on a photo.

Start with a bare window.   Create your DreamDraper design - all to scale - and fill your design with actual fabric.

The illustration on the right depicts what normally would happen if you inserted images from a website.  Most furniture and accessories have a background such as that white block background surrounding the chairs, that obscures parts of the design or photo.  DreamDraper is the first design program to give you the ability to remove that white background, with a click of your mouse!

When you first insert your furniture, the DreamDraper program will detect the background border (see #1 in the illustration at left).

With literally just a click of the mouse (see #2 in the illustration at right - just click on the box), you can eliminate the background... and voila!  See the image below.

Nothing could be easier or faster!

Present truly professional, realistic renderings, all within a single program - DreamDraper!  The ability to remove the unwanted background of a furniture image, literally with a click of the mouse, is another DreamDraper innovation!

The finished window treatment is shown in the photo on the left.  Notice how similar it looks to the DreamDraper rendering shown  above.

In our next newsletter, we will show you how you can design on a photo, and literally tuck your window treatment sketch behind the furniture in the photo - in a few seconds!  Or you can cut out the chaise lounge in the photo - in seconds - and use it in a different setting.  All done within DreamDraper.  No other program required.  All exclusive to DreamDraper.
