How to Use Fabric Images From Websites

We often get asked how to save a fabric image from a website, so that it can be incorporated into a DreamDraper design and used for a presentation to your client.  It's easy to do.

The first step is to find the swatch.  Sometimes a fabric company's website will show you a thumbnail version of the swatch and give you an option to see the larger version.  Generally you should try to save the larger version, as you want to capture as much of the repeat as possible and get the sharpest image available.

This procedure will work for the PC on most websites, although occasionally you will come across a site that has been protected and you will not be able to save the images using this method.

After you have found your swatch, place your mouse over the fabric image and right-click.  A menu of options will appear, similar to the illustration shown on the left.

Then left-click on the option show in the illustration:  Save Picture As...

At this point, a Save Picture pop-up window will appear, similar to the illustration below.

The next step is to choose the location on your hard drive where you want to save the file.  Most of our customers save their information in client folders located under MY DOCUMENTS, which is highlighted in red.  To quickly go to that location, click on the MY DOCUMENTS icon on the left side of the pop-up window.  Or use the "Save in:" drop-down box that is located at the top of the pop-up window, to navigate to the location on your computer where you want to save the file.

Remember these important tips:

  1. Remember the location on your computer where you saved the file.  A common problem is that people will save the files, and then they can't remember where they are located!

  2. Remember the filename.  Fabric companies will often name their fabric images with unique identifiers, but you may want to prefix the filename to indicate the company, for future reference.

  3. Try not to include special characters in a filename, other than underscores and dashes.  Some programs will not recognize files that contain special characters as part of the filename.

  4. A filename should only contain one period, located between the filename and the extension, such as "filename.jpg"

  5. Make sure that you are saving the fabric image as a JPG file, with an extension of jpg.

Now that your fabric image has been saved to your hard drive, you can now import it into the DreamDraper program and incorporate that fabric into your designs.

If you need to crop the fabric image, remember you can do so in the DreamDraper program!  Unlike other design programs, no other software is required.  Just import your image and use the exclusive fabric crop feature (shown in the illustration below).
